Owner Mike Thornton of Abilene, TX has been in the tree business for over 30 years and has steadily expanded his company to include crane service. dumpster rental, storage units, and more.
Over the years Mike has been using cranes for the tree business as a natural step to safely and efficiently remove trees from tight or inaccessible locations. And we have plenty of those here in West Texas. The crane service division was a good fit for the company as this portion of our business has grown we continue to expand our fleet to encompass cranes large enough to handle the majority of jobs our customers need.
About The Owner
Mike was raised in the state of Oregon, working in forestry while he was still in high school. While in high school Mike excelled in track and field, specifically the pole vault. Mike held the Oregon state pole vault record in 1984 at 16 feet 7 inches for a number of years but has since slipped to a tie for 6th all-time in the Oregon state high school pole vault records.
He left Oregon and came to Abilene, TX to attend Abilene Christian University in part attracted by the attendance there of Olympian Billy Olson who recorded the first indoor 19-foot pole vault.
While Mike was on the ACU track and field team as a pole vaulter he met and married his wife, Stephanie, while they both were attending ACU. After graduating with a degree in education, specializing in physical education, Mike went on to teach for 10 years while doing landscape maintenance in the evenings to help support his growing family. He then started up Thornton’s Tree Service in 1991. For a time Stephanie owned and ran her own glass-blowing studio before becoming a full-time mother actively raising the couple’s 5 children.
